Computer Science Research Assistant (Undergrad or Grad)

The Faculty of Computer Science is currently recruiting an undergraduate or graduate student to work with a software development team at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada.

 

In concert with Dr. Cora Woolsey, Dr. Scott Bateman, and the STRATUM research and development team, the successful candidate will support the development of innovative archeological software for data collection and mapping in the field. This is a MITACS-funded, full-time position for a period of four months with the possibility of renewal.

Project Description

The successful candidate will contribute to the research and development agenda of the STRATUM developer team to create an innovative field mapping and data collection tool for archeologists.

​

We are seeking to appoint two Undergraduate Research Assistants to work on implementation of STRATUM, an archaeological software, with Dr. Cora Woolsey, Dr. Scott Bateman, and the STRATUM research and development team at UNB. The successful candidate will contribute to the research agenda of the STRATUM team, with a particular focus on developing a mapping and data collection interface that incorporates the results of a user needs study and testing the resulting software in the field with users. Duties will include working with the development team to program a mapping interface for integration with the STRATUM software.

Requirements

We are seeking candidates with strong coding and development skills.

​

Completed undergraduate degree in computer science, geoscience, geomatics, engineering, or a similar field within the last year or enrollment at UNB in one of the above-mentioned fields is required.

​

Eligibility Requirements:
  • A minimum of one year of practical work experience in a development environment

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Experience with Unity Game Engine and Mobile development

  • Python, SQL, C# or related programming languages

  • Strong JSON skills are considered an asset

  • Strong understanding of communication technologies as well as mapping, science, geodesy, and related technologies

  • A passion for troubleshooting and resolving GIS software-related problems.

  • Applied knowledge of a variety of GIS applications e.g. ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCAD, QGIS, Avenza

 

Desired Assets:
  • Strong desire and capacity to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment·

  • Completion of an accredited cartographic or GIS educational program or equivalent work experience

  • Experience with UX/HCI research design

  • Familiarity with online data portals and mapping (Google Maps, Mapbox, Avenza)

  • Familiarity with databases, especially Filemaker Pro

 

The candidate will work closely with academic colleagues from various disciplines and with multiple stakeholders from industry, government, and the Indigenous community.

Salary Range/ Pay Rate:

$25.93/hour for 30 hours/week.

Start Date and Duration of Appointment:

Immediately; the position will continue for three months.
